Black Cat – Fruit Bat

Limited Time Feature

Rotund in dimension, accented with tropical fruit flavors and an effervescent brightness. The nose is strongly floral, evocative of hibiscus blossoms and lavender. Intertwined in a silken and buttery presence on the palate are residues of mango nectar, dried pineapple, candied ginger and punctuated by acidity reminiscent of lemonlime bitters and fresh green apple.

Rich Smooth Sweet & Fruity

NEW COFFEE on the Clover – April 7, 2010

Posted in Announcements, Coffee with tags , , , , on April 7, 2010 by smilinggoat

El Salvador – Puerta Zapa

Direct Trade / ‘In Season’ offering

Bright and supple, Puerta Zapa has a round mouthfeel that’s lush with Clementine oranges and melon. Notes of maple syrup meld into cherry and transform to an apricot finish.

Finca Matalapa is a farm that is located in the La Cumbre mountain ranges just south of the capital and enjoys a distinctly different climate than the more well-known coffee region of Santa Ana. The farm faces the Pacific Ocean and receives a good deal of moisture and occasionally powerful winds that surely influence the character of the coffee. Its name comes from the Nahuat language (of Aztec origin, still spoken in El Salvador and Central Mexico) and could be loosely translated as “land where rivers are born.” A trip to the farm makes it clear where this name came from: there are twenty-one fresh water springs on the land that feed into the El Zote River. This particular lot comes from a section (or ‘tablon’) of the farm called “Puerto Zapa”, which despite its location in the lowest-altitude zone of Matalapa has been producing some beautiful coffees that are a little softer and more approachable than those from other parts of the finca.

Rwanda Zirikana Bufcafe – NOW AVAILABLE!

Posted in Announcements, Coffee with tags , , on February 24, 2010 by smilinggoat

As voted by our Blog readers, we are pleased to offer the Rwanda Zirikana Bufcafe from Intelligentsia brewed on our Clover.

This coffee is extremely fruit-forward and sincere. Peach nectar precedes a honeyed mouthfeel and an extended flavor of grape, lime and nectarine. A finish of cacao and walnut frame the experience.

Rwanda is a country transforming before our eyes, and with luck it will succeed in becoming an example of positive, sustainable development for the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. Rwanda is producing some of the cleanest coffee in all of Africa and is a hot new option in the Specialty market, so much so that Roasters are actually fighting with each other to obtain some of these outstanding beans. Bufcafe is a real standout in a country full of incredible stories of reinvention and development progress. Buf’s growth captures this dynamic and is without question one of the most successful of the washing station projects that have been proliferating in Rwanda since 2002. We chose to name this coffee Zirikana (a Kinyarwandan word meaning “show your commitment”) because that’s what this whole coffee gig is about.

We have some fantastic new coffees on the Clover menu right now!

Zambia – Munama

An ‘In Season’ offering

Aromatics of citrus fruit and baking spice precede cup flavors of tangerine, dried cherry and cardamom spice. The mouthfeel is expansive and incredibly velvety steadying the acidity and providing balance. The finish is equally widespread as the body with long notes of grapefruit, cinnamon, and baker’s chocolate.

Fair Trade Organic / Bird Friendly

Cooperative Nubes de Oro, “Clouds of Gold,” is located in Chiapas area. There are a total of 21 small communities, where the 430 Cooperative members live. It is also certified by the Smithsonian Institution as “Bird Friendly”.

Very deep-toned, balanced sweetness of orangy citrus, nut, and a hint of chocolate. Look for a rich, slightly wine-toned acidity, lightly syrupy mouthfeel and a vanilla & caramel finish.
